A musical signature from Quebec will accompany Estonian figure skater Niina Petrokina during her short program at the Winter Olympic Games in Milan. Montreal-born violinist and composer Nathalie Bonin will hear her piece Criminal Tango resonate across the Olympic ice, as the athlete has selected the work to support her performance.

Originally from Montreal and now based in Los Angeles, Nathalie Bonin has carved out an enviable place in the world of music for film and television. Her composition, from the album Taste of Light, will underscore the 21-year-old skater’s performance, scheduled for February 17.

 

Niina Petrokina arrives in Milan following a second consecutive European title, won last January in Sheffield. Her musical choice highlights the growing international reach of the Quebec composer’s work, recognized for its cinematic intensity and emotional power.

 

A Career Marked by Distinction

In recent years, Nathalie Bonin has accumulated numerous honors. She contributed to the album Women Warriors: The Voices of Change, which received a Grammy Award in 2022 in the Best Classical Compendium category. In 2023, she was awarded the SOCAN Screen Composer of the Year prize and was also recognized at the SCL Awards and the SESAC Live Film Awards.

Her music has extended beyond the concert hall to major screens and streaming platforms. Criminal Tango was featured in the trailer for the series The Decameron, while Prestigious Emblem was selected for the official promotion of Season 3 of Bridgerton.

 

From Legendary Studios to Major Stages

In 2024, she released the album Aspirations, recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. She has also recorded at Synchron Stage Vienna and collaborated with renowned artists such as Stevie Wonder, Deadmau5, and Luciano Pavarotti.

Before establishing herself internationally, Nathalie Bonin made her mark in Quebec, notably as violinist with the group Tocadéo and on tour with Bruno Pelletier, Garou, Charles Aznavour, and Gino Vannelli.

Creator of an aerial violin act presented notably at the NHL All-Star Game, the musician continues to innovate on stage.
