Bernie Zuckermans award winning film, The Sleep Room, was the most recent Canadians Abroad screening. Viewed at the Eastman Kodak screening room in Hollywood on Sunday September 20th 1998, the drama was based upon the notorious CIA-funded brainwashing experiments conducted by Dr. Ewen Cameron on hundreds of unsuspecting patients at
Montreals Allan Memorial Institute in the 1950s & 60s.
The subject matter of this film, as well as the previous Canadians Abroad screening of The Arrow, reflect unique incidents in Canadian history. While many Canadians are not proud of the way individuals in positions of power acted, we are nonetheless a society that tries to view its past mistakes with open eyes through vehicles such as these films. However, we know that Canadian cinema encompasses much more, so Canadians Abroad future screenings shall endeavour to bring you selections from other genre which may include the comedy, sex and violence we know is alive and well in Canada.
Many thanks to our own Michael Zakula of Kodak for use of the facilities and to Ron Merrick and Kathie Stephenson for the refreshments served.
