Robert Lewis Speaks To Canadians Abroad
March 30th, 1998
by L.Leszczynski
The Changing Face of Canada was the topic of discussion by Robert Lewis, editor of Maclean's magazine.Over 40 people attended the speaking engagement on Monday March 30th at the Eastman Kodak offices in Hollywood. They listened to Mr. Lewis thoughts on the Canadian citizenry and the current political environment. The timing of this event, sponsored by Canadians Abroad, was fortuitous as Jean Charest had just thrown his hat into the provincial leadership race in Quebec. The evening proved a great opportunity for the expatriates in the audience to discuss the future of Canada; a group whom he noted maintains a keen interest in matters back home. Mr. Lewis offered the view that Canadas citizens are becoming similar to their US neighbors as evidenced by their growing distrust of authority and government. He also noted, sadly, that within Canada the divide between a have and a have not society has grown, represented by an increase in homelessness. Additionally, he suggested that traditional Canadian stereotypes are fading, given the global business environment in which we are competing.A question and answer period followed. Thanks very much to Michael Zakula and Kodak for use of their facilities and Nicole Bonnett for providing the lovely dessert table. Thanks also go to program Chair Reina MacDonald and Maclean's for their generous door prizes.
