I'm a Canadian elector living abroad. How do I vote?
If you're a Canadian elector, your residence is outside Canada, and you meet certain eligibility criteria, you can vote by mail in this election.
To vote by mail (special ballot), your name must be in the International Register of Electors, a list of Canadians temporarily living outside Canada who can vote in federal elections. Your name must be in this register if you want to vote by special ballot and your residence is outside Canada.
If you've already added your name to the International Register of Electors, expect your special ballot voting kit to arrive by mail. Your kit will explain how to mail in your vote.
If you're not sure whether your name is in the International Register of Electors, or if you are registered but did not receive your special ballot voting kit, call Elections Canada as soon as possible.
If your name is not in the International Register of Electors, apply now to vote by mail from abroad. You may also get an Application for Registration and Special Ballot for Canadian Citizens Residing Outside Canada at any Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate, or by calling Elections Canada.
Apply ASAP.
- Allow enough time for your application to be processed, a special ballot voting kit to be mailed to you, and your completed ballot to be mailed back to Ottawa.
- Send your application and a copy of your identification documents by fax (the fastest) or mail.
- The deadline to apply to vote by special ballot is 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Tuesday, April 26.
- If we accept your application, we will mail you a special ballot voting kit and add your name to the International Register of Electors.
Send in your vote ASAP.
- By law, Elections Canada in Ottawa must receive your completed special ballot by 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Monday, May 2, or it will not be counted.
- It's your responsibility to ensure that your application form and ballot arrive on time.
